Hybrid & Blended Education – A Comparative Study


The post-pandemic situation has brought in various new ways of lifestyle. Even the education sector has also witnessed a huge transition. Students were directly shifted to in-house online education from traditional walk-in campus education. In the post-pandemic situation, schools are slowly returning to the old education culture.

But now, after practicing online education, experts started discussing various new models of education. Hybrid and blended learning are two of them. From a general perspective, both might appear the same – the mixture of in-person and online learning. But if looked at vividly, one can see that there lies a difference between the two.

What is Hybrid Learning?

Hybrid learning is a mixture of both online and offline classes. Hybrid learning refers to both offline and online students attending the classes at the same time. In simpler words, a class at a single point time has in-person and virtual students. This model truly creates more of a flexible learning environment. Hybrid learning has the following benefits –

  • Available resources can be used more efficiently.

What is Blended Learning?

As the name suggests, blended learning also suggests a mixture of online and offline classes but is different from Hybrid Learning. In blended learning, students have a certain number of face-to-face classes are supplemented by online classes. Today technology is widely available among both instructors and students. This is influencing most modern classes to adapt blended models. A blended form of learning has the following advantages.

  • Better comprehensive classes
  • Cost-effective and more efficient 

Difference between Hybrid & Blended Learning

As mentioned earlier, hybrid and blended learning might seem similar, but it is not. There lies a significant difference between the two. Both the models are developed to bring in the advantages of flexibility, scalability, and accessibility in the field of education. But the procedure implemented is different in both cases.

On the one hand, hybrid learning seeks to balance online and offline classes to ensure the best experience for students at their convenience. Whereas the blended model is more of a split model of online classes and in-person classes. In this model, students opting for offline classes go completely for offline classes, and the same goes for online classes. 

In simpler words, blended learning creates an environment online learning complements offline classes, whereas, in a hybrid environment, online learning relaces or supplements in-person classes. 

Now which works better mostly depends on the fact that what works the best for you. But before jumping to that conclusion, let’s see how can these two methods be implemented.

Implementing Hybrid Learning –

  1. Set term goals –   At first, set the goals for the term. What do you want to achieve? What percentage of the portion do you want to cover? How must the students be assessed? – these are some questions that you need to find an answer to. This will help you explain the key expectations to students as well. 
  2. Frame a work plan – Now that you have your goals set, you must chalk out a plan to achieve them. You must know how you want to navigate your hybrid class. You must know about the different tools to help you attain your goal in the stipulated time.
  3. Determine the in-person objectives of the course – Once you have the basic information now, you are supposed to include the various hybrid factors in the same. First, plan the activities that will be more effective in in-person classes. Plan when to start what and how to implement them.
  4. Determine the online objectives of the course – Once you have the in-person curriculum in hand, automatically, you will know what curriculum is to be done online. Prepare your schedule accordingly. 
  5. File contents – As the hybrid model will have both online and offline curricula at the same point in time, you must be ready with the content you want to provide in each of these classes. The information shared will be the same. It is just that you need to be sure of the medium in which you want to share it. 

Implementing Blended Classes 

  1. Using different teaching tools – When you divide your class into both online and offline portions, you must use various tools keeping in mind the different techniques of online and offline classes. You must make sure to make students comfortable in both scenarios. 
  2. Personalizing learning pathways for every student – Not all students have the same approach to learning. Hence, you must prepare content accordingly so as to fit all students in the classroom. Also, try to prepare different content for both offline and online classes.
  3. Choose the convenient structure – There are three common structures of blended learning models. You must choose the one that is most convenient for you.
  • Station Rotation model – Understudies pivot through various learning stations in class. This could be a combination of gathering work, internet learning, little gathering guidance, and full class cooperation
  • Flipped Classroom Model – Students are first acquainted with ideas at home through web-based coursework and afterward practice in class with educator help.
  • Flex Model – Pupils work through web-based learning exercises on an altered and liquid timetable with educator help on a case-by-case basis.


Both hybrid and blended form of education uses online and offline learning, but in different ways. Both types of models have their own set of benefits. Now if you ask which to use? The answer will be the one which is most convenient for both the instructor and the students. Whichever method you use, it will enhance the learning environment to be more flexible and more accessible.
